Serve

One body, many parts. Everyone has a role to play!

In Matthew 9, Jesus is looking out through eyes of compassion at a crowd of people and says “the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few”. It’s both an indictment and an invitation. Here at St Basil’s we are determined to take up Jesus’ invitation: to be a church of many workers. We don’t want an over-active core group of people working at an unsustainable pace to outwork the vision of the church, and yet have a huge fringe of consumers or a mass of people who’ve discounted themselves. We’re determined to change the tide, break the mould and draw as many as possible into the life and mission of the church as possible.

Serve on a Central Service team

We gather as community for worship at our weekly Central Service. If you consider yourself a part of this St Basil’s community of faith, we ask that you sign up to serve once a month on a team.

We long for our church gatherings to be defined by a culture of service not consumption, participation not observation. We believe gathering as a church family is a privilege we collectively own and make possible.

Serve elsewhere in the life of our community

We invite everyone at St Basil’s to find a SWEET SPOT (sharing our gifts) and a SERVE SPOT (meeting a need) in the life of the church.

A ‘sweet spot’ is about finding a way of contributing that makes use of your passions and talents and loves: it is something that really makes you come alive and feels like a strength for you. We long to see people understand how God has made them and know that those passions and skills and interests can enrich the church and strengthen its mission.

A ‘serve spot’ is all about prioritising serving the whole body where its needs are; it may not be something that you find obviously exciting but it is something that helps the wider church community to function and thrive. There is immense privilege here: in service we get to prefer those around us and play a part in making vision reality. Our primary need for this is people to serve at a Central Service (see section above).

Get in touch if you have an area of the life of the church that you wish to serve in.

Listen to our most recent teaching on service

In September 2024, our vicar – Pete – spoke on the way Jesus modelled a life of humility and service, unpacking the profound beauty of Philippians 2. If you want to grow into the likeness of Jesus and follow in his footsteps, give it a listen!
